5 Easy Steps to Finding your Perfect Wedding Dress
I literally can’t believe today is my second anniversary of finding my perfect wedding dress. I remember the journey like it was yesterday.
I’ve heard so many horror stories and know how daunting it can be when it comes to finding the perfect wedding dress. I didn’t let these stories taint me. I started my search as soon as we set the wedding date and booked our venue. We had our date and venue booked within the first month of our engagement. I think I started looking for my dress in early February and by mid-March, I was saying “YES” to the dress.
I loved looking at wedding dresses. It was such a fun and memorable experience. It only took two dress-hunting days for me to find my perfect wedding dress and I couldn’t believe how easy it was.
A friendly tip: keep your entourage small. My mom and my two matrons of honor accompanied me. Keeping it small is definitely the way to go in my opinion. The fewer opinions the better, your opinion matters the most.
I truly think every bride should have an enjoyable journey to finding their dream dress and it can happen.
Here are 5 easy steps to finding your perfect wedding dress that will ensure your wedding dress journey is a breeze.
1. Pinterest is your best friend
Pinterest is a game-changer. I use it for everything. Before I even got engaged I had an “ideal wedding” board, but shortly after I said “yes” I created our winter wedding board and my dream wedding dress board. I would scroll for hours searching and pinning different looks and vibes. Pinterest allows you to see what’s out there and gives you ideas of what you may want. Allow your creativity to flow when you’re searching for ideas, you will be surprised what you come across and may even fall in love with.
2. Decide the theme/style of your wedding
How do you want your wedding to feel? What do you want your wedding to look like? Once you decide the theme/style of your wedding, everything stems from that. We decided that we wanted an evening black-tie look for our wedding, so that meant my dress had to match that as well. Picking the theme/style of your wedding helps narrow down your search pool and makes it easier to find your perfect wedding dress.
3. Step outside your box
I know for some of us, we’ve dreamed of our perfect wedding day, but I challenge you to step outside the box. I’ll never forget when my grandma mentioned that I should wear a ball gown. A ball gown was not on my radar at all, I was actually against it. But once I tried a few I loved the “princess” look and my wedding dress was actually a ball gown. Don’t say no to a look or style until you actually try it on. You may be surprised like I was.
4. Figure out the budget and stick with it
First, decide your budget before you even go to the store and don’t budge from it. You don’t want to even look and potentially fall in love with a dress that you can’t afford. At the second boutique, I fell in love with a dress. Now I know I shouldn’t have tried this dress on, but I just had to. Although the dress was beautiful, it was way over our budget. For the longest I was comparing all the dresses I tried on to that dress I knew we couldn’t afford. Don’t do that, figure out the budget and stick to it.
5. Be you and don’t lose sight of what you love
What do you love? What are you most comfortable in? I know when it comes to weddings, white dresses are the norm, but your dress can be whatever color, style, length, or theme you want. This day is about you and your future husband and don’t lose sight of that. Allow your personality to shine in your dress and be you. I remember walking into the dress store and seeing my dress hanging up and it was love at first sight. I was a little nervous though because it wasn’t white. After I tried it on, all the reservations went away and I didn’t care at all. Even the dress consultant thought of me when the dress arrived for the trunk show that day and hoped I would come in and coincidentally we did. It was a beautiful thing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Finding your perfect wedding dress does not have to be hard or stressful at all. Enjoy the moment and try on all the dresses especially the ones you wouldn’t think twice about it. Enjoy the journey, you’ll be happy you did.
