Power Down & Reclaim the Power Within: 5 Reasons Why You Need A Social Media Detox
Hey loves!!!
It’s been a minute! ⏱ A few weeks to be exact. The past few weeks have been an eye opening experience for me and a much needed self-discovery journey. Let me unfold this story really quick.
We all know I launched my blog on my birthday a few months ago and I was super excited. I was knocking out posts, planning shoots, researching my next steps and then BOOM💥…I got sucked into this hole. I found myself in this weird state of comparison. I would look at others and get mad at myself, not knowing the steps or time they took to get where they were and compare it to my chapter 1. Not only did this make me upset, I wasn’t happy where I was career-wise either …so in-turn I felt defeated. I was in a bad mental space and just didn’t care anymore. I would talk about it with my friends and try to convince myself that I was good but I couldn’t shake the feeling. I went through this for about a month and then in July a shift happened. 💃🏽 I’ll never forget…it was the last Sunday in July, I was at church and by the end of service I just let it all go 🙌🏾 It was on that day I broke up with doubt (more on that later) and started feeling like myself again. But, where did this come from??? On the outside looking in, I looked like I had it all together but on the inside I was crying out. I believe that comparing myself to others brought a sense of competition during a time where I wasn’t confident in myself. (SN: Check on your “strong” friends, you never know what someone is going through.)
So fast forward to today! What has this journey taught me? It has taught me the importance of unplugging. Although my hiatus wasn’t planned and started out rough, I do believe that it is important to take a social media detox and here are 5️⃣ reasons why:
- The detox allows you to reclaim your inner power and focus on yourself. When you’re not constantly scrolling down your feed and looking at everyone else, you realize how bomb you really are. You begin to find happiness and joy in the hills and valleys of your own journey. You find a true appreciation of your inner strength.
- The detox allows you to get stuff done and check things off your to-do list. Do you notice how much time you spend of social media on a daily basis? You can tell yourself you’ll just hop on for 10 minutes and those 10 minutes turn into 30 minutes or even an hour. Social media can be a time hog and if you’re not careful you’ll waste precious time and look up and not have any thing to show for constant scrolls. By eliminating distractions you waste less time and get more done. ✅
- The detox allows you to eliminate negativity and toxicity from your life. We all know that some people just don’t have manners and nowadays people hide behind screens and say things that they would never say to someone’s face. Although it seems foolish, the words and thoughts of others could get to you. By taking a step away from the screen scene you decrease the possibility of someone interrupting your positive vibes.
- The detox allows you to appreciate your “right now”. As we go through life, the only constant thing is change. As you’re changing you want to embrace every step (good or bad); we will never get this time again. We get so consumed on what’s happening on screen that we forget and miss what’s right in front of us. Take the time to really appreciate now and embrace everything in front of you.
- The detox allows you to remove the unhealthy feelings of jealousy and envy. There is a such thing as healthy competition, but the only true competition you should have is with yourself. If you’re constantly looking at others, you can find yourself in a state of jealousy and envy. Take a step back and appreciate your journey and the progress you’re making.
To bring this home, I really want you to take some kind of social media detox. It doesn’t have to be two months, but maybe a day or a week or even once two months you take a few days off. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it and may even discover something new about yourself. ❤️
